The International Journalism Seminar-Assisi (IJSA) incorporates the diverse spectrum of challenges and rewards of learning how to “get the story” in an international context. Students will be challenged on a variety of fronts. They will be required to write pieces related to local happenings in Assisi, local personalities, national (Italian and/or E.U.) news (of interest or relevance to the U.S. and/or college constituency), historical research on some aspect of the life of Saint Francis or Saint Clare or other history related to Assisi or the region (requiring them to penetrate the libraries—a challenge in and of itself). They will learn to work with a translator; learn the hard work of overcoming obstacles to win trust in a foreign context; they will learn the value of tenacity, patience, persistence and going outside of one’s comfort zone.
